For the first time in the history of the Steam Hardware Survey, graphics cards with 16GB of VRAM are more common than 8GB cards. Eight-core processors have crossed the same line against six-core chips. Neither margin is large, but both flipped in the same month, and that says something about where PC gaming’s baseline has quietly moved. Here are the actual numbers and what they mean if you are planning a build.
The Numbers
The survey results break down like this:
- 16GB GPUs: 25.90 percent of surveyed systems
- 8GB GPUs: 25.32 percent
- 8-core CPUs: 27.85 percent
- 6-core CPUs: 27.52 percent
The GPU shift happened fast. In the previous month, 16GB cards sat at 24.50 percent, meaning they gained roughly 1.4 percentage points in a single survey period while 8GB cards slipped about 0.32 points. That is a meaningful rate of change for a metric that normally moves in tenths.
The CPU numbers are closer, and the two categories have been converging for well over a year. Eight-core finally edging ahead is less a sudden shift than the end of a slow one.
Why VRAM Became the Bottleneck
The 8GB card was the safe recommendation for most of the last decade. That stopped being true somewhere around the point when texture streaming, ray tracing and upscaling buffers all started competing for the same memory pool in the same frame.
Several forces pushed this along at once:
- Game requirements outran the hardware. A run of recent releases either stutter or force texture downgrades at 1440p on 8GB, which turned VRAM into a visible problem rather than a spec-sheet argument.
- Upscaling is not free. DLSS, FSB and XeSS reduce render resolution but still need memory for their own buffers, and frame generation adds more on top.
- Card lineups moved. The current generation put 16GB into more mid-range slots than the previous one did, so buyers were getting the upgrade whether or not they were shopping for it.
The 8-core CPU trend has a simpler explanation. Game engines have gotten better at spreading work across threads, and the price gap between six and eight cores narrowed enough that the extra headroom became an easy upgrade.
The Awkward Timing
The catch is that this milestone arrives in the middle of a genuinely bad year for buying PC parts. GPU prices have kept climbing through 2026, driven by a lack of sale discounts and rising VRAM costs, and the memory market has been tight enough that HP, Asus and Acer have all turned to Chinese memory suppliers for certain non-US notebook models.
So the survey is describing a shift that largely already happened, driven by cards bought before the current pricing situation set in. Anyone building right now faces a different math problem: 16GB is clearly the sensible target, and it is also more expensive relative to performance than it was a year ago.
The practical advice has not really changed. If you are buying a card today and intend to keep it for more than a couple of years, 16GB is the floor, not the luxury tier. Whether that is worth the current premium depends entirely on how long you plan to hold onto it.
Steam’s survey has confirmed what most build guides have been saying for a while: 16GB of VRAM and eight cores are the new normal rather than the enthusiast option. The more interesting number to watch is next month’s, since a second consecutive gain for 16GB would confirm this as a trend rather than a single-month crossover. Given how GPU pricing is trending, the pace of that shift is not guaranteed.
